We are excited to publish a new interview with Bianca Tavolari on her co-authored article “Occupied Public Schools in São Paulo (2015-2016): Between Public Tenure and the Right to Freedom of Expression,” recently translated by the CritUP network. The article, co-written with Marília Rolemberg Lessa, Jonas Medeiros, Rúrion Melo and Adriano Januário, retraces key events from the 2015-2016 cycle of school occupations in São Paulo, analyzes the emerging conflicts within the arenas of the public sphere, the law, and political struggles, and situates these events within the broader context of the rise of authoritarianism. In this video commentary, Tavolari presents the central arguments of the article, provides background on its origins, and explores theoretical and political questions that arise from it. Bianca Tavolari is professor of law at FGV São Paulo Law School and a researcher at the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP). Her work and publications focus on urban law and policy, critical theory, social movements, and struggles for housing and the right to the city.
